appointment information

  • I offer both in-person and remote appointments. I have COVID safety precautions in place for in-person visits, and I provide online therapy for California residents.

  • To best address your therapy goals, I work on a weekly basis and hold sessions at the same day and time each week. Occasionally, this can be increased to twice per week if needed.

  • Since my fee structure changes periodically, please contact me for current fee information.

I do not work directly with any insurance providers; however, I can provide a monthly superbill that can be submitted to insurance for partial reimbursement, depending on your plan. You’ll need to contact your insurance provider to verify whether you have these benefits. Some good questions to ask are:

    • Are there outpatient out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy on my plan?

    • How much do you reimburse per session?

    • Do I need to hit my deductible before receiving reimbursement?

    • Is there a limit to the number of sessions you cover?

    • What is the process for submitting claims?

    • What is your policy for reimbursing for telehealth vs. in office visits?

You can also verify your benefits directly through Mentaya.

the therapy process

  • Gender-affirming care, according to the World Health Organization, includes social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it’s different from the gender assigned at birth. The WPATH recommends gender-affirming care. ‘Gender Exploratory’ therapy is a purposefully confusing name for harmful conversion therapy banned in many states. Here's a great article written by LGBTQ+ journalists that goes into more detail. If you're trans, or seeking therapy for a trans person, I invite you to ask therapists you're considering about their approach and experience supporting transgender and gender-expansive people.

  • The advantages include:

    • Licensed therapists have completed a psychology graduate degree, gained thousands of hours of clinical experience and training and passed a state-regulated licensing exam. They also participate in continuing education and ongoing professional development.

    • Therapists are required to comply with an established set of legal and ethical standards regulating the profession.

    • The cost of therapy is a reimbursable medical expense if you have outpatient out-of-network mental health benefits on your plan.

    • Coaches may not have any education, training or knowledge about mental health or trauma and may not know how to work with it effectively, which can impede progress. (Levels of trauma education also vary among therapists, so this is a good thing to inquire about during your search.)

    • Coaches may focus on achieving goals or trying to change unwanted thoughts, feelings or behaviors without addressing the underlying reasons a person is having them. Like trimming a weed rather than pulling it out at the roots, problems tend to persist if we don't deal with them more deeply.

  • Research shows that one of the most important predictors of the degree of success in therapy is the quality of the relationship between the therapist and client, so it’s key to find someone you really feel you’ll be able to trust.
